Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the 6th-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million.
Avram Goldfarb, when in the mercantile business in Aachen, had interacted with enough people from Amsterdam to become fluent in the language of the Netherlands. Therefore it was clear to him that the mysterious language of the Rivington Men was not Dutch, though it closely resembled it and German and was considered a "mishmash" of languages, written by madmen.[1]
