Amphioxus (or lancelets (subphylum Cephalochordata) are a group of primitive chordates. They are an important object of study in zoology as they provide indications about the origins of the vertebrates. Professor Cthulhu used amphioxus as an example of a primitive creature and how Hox genes determine appearance and ability.
