"Always Something New" is a short alternate history work by Harry Turtledove published online at Tor.com and in e-book form on January 8, 2020. It is part of a series of stories featuring Bill Williamson, the Sasquatch governor of the state of Jefferson.
The story takes place in November 1980. Chronology is established in the opening scene, as Williamson and his political clique react passionately to the news of Ronald Reagan's election as President. With this historical context out of the way, the story switches to its main focus: the discovery of a "living fossil" speartooth, a type of salmon believed to extinct for 2.5 million years. Williamson meets with the fisherman who caught the specimen, the local game warden, and an ichthyologist, before appearing in a news story about the rediscovered fish on Charles Kuralt's television program.
