Albuquerque is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The high-altitude city serves as the county seat of Bernalillo County, and it is situated in the central part of the state, straddling the Rio Grande. The city population is 557,169 as of the July 1, 2014, population estimate from the United States Census Bureau.
In May, 1934, Albuquerque was the largest city in New Mexico, which still made it a pretty small city compared with others in the country. Jack Spivey realized it was only a little large than his hometown of Enid, Oklahoma. He appreciated the view of the mountains, though. Further, manager Harv Watrous emphasized that as Albuquerque had an elevation just about a mile high, playing there would be good preparation for the semi-pro tournament in Denver in June.[1]
In July 1949, the United States successfully tested an atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert, 100 miles south of Albuquerque. The test, which took place in the early morning and was felt for miles, was officially explained to be an explosion at an ammo dump.[5]
