Alardo was the only independent Duke of Bari. At the end of the Six Years' War, when the Duchy of Bari was separated from the Kingdom of Algarve by Valmiera and Jelgava, Alardo was installed as sovereign monarch of the new duchy. He was determined to distance his new duchy from its mother country politically, culturally, and linguistically, but he had little luck reforming his highly pro-Algarvian subjects.
Though he lived a long life, Alardo died without an heir,[1] and King Mezentio of Algarve decided to reunite the Duchy to his kingdom and invaded Bari, much to the delight of the Barian people[2]--but to the fury of Valmiera, Jelgava, Sibiu, and Forthweg, who decided they could not tolerate this action by treaty.[3] Thus, the Derlavaian War began.
