Advance and Retreat (Baen, 2002) is the third and final volume in The War Between the Provinces fantasy series by Harry Turtledove.
Lieutenant General Bell, head of the Army of Franklin, is determined to defeat Doubting George's occupying southron army in Franklin Province. Bell manages to destroy most of his own army attacking George's forces at Poor Richard and Ramblerton, but refuses to believe that his strategy is flawed or that his side is losing the war. As Duke Edward of Arlington's Army of Southern Parthenia - the only other northern army of any notable strength - is being eaten away at Pierreville, it becomes apparent that the northern rebellion is being lost, and Detinan serfdom is soon to be a thing of the past.
